Calligraphy Workshop
with Sushi & Inari Tasting Experience
at Setsugekka East Village
Please join us to enjoy calligraphy! We look forward to seeing you.
As we approach the 250th anniversary of American Independence Day, we invite you to celebrate through the art of Shodo, Japanese calligraphy, with Rihaku Inoue, a renowned
Japanese calligrapher.
Together, we will reflect on the journey of those who dreamed of freedom and opened new paths, and express our own “Yume Hiraku” (“Opening Dreams”) through brush and
ink.
Artist Rihaku Inoue shares a personal connection to this theme: her great-uncle left Fukuoka for San Francisco around 110 years ago, inspired by the American Dream. Although she never had the chance to meet him, she has recently found herself deeply imagining the moment he first arrived on this land. The quiet, prayer-like feeling she holds toward that moment is also woven into this summer’s theme of “Yume Hiraku.”
After the calligraphy session, we will gather together to enjoy maki sushi and inari sushi, prepared under the supervision of Michelin-starred sushi chef Yoshi Kousaka.
We would be honored to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States with you through the spirit of Shodo at Setsugekka.
We warmly look forward to welcoming you.

Japanese Calligraphy Artist / Founder of RIHAKU New York
Rihaku Inoue
Rihaku's story begins when she was just four years old — captivated by the quiet, ordered beauty of characters printed in a Japanese newspaper. That single moment of wonder led her to Japanese calligraphy, a path she has pursued for more than fifty years.
A graduate of Konan Women's University, Rihaku is today a contemporary Japanese calligraphy artist based in New York and Japan, serving as an advisor to the Japan Calligraphy Art Museum and a professor of the Japan Education Calligraphy Federation. For over 27 years she has also devoted herself to nurturing the next generation of practitioners.
Her work is grounded in traditional ink brushwork while embracing cutting-edge technologies — acrylic media, projection mapping, and VR — in a distinctive practice she calls Immersive 3D Japanese Calligraphy, exploring new expressive territory that releases Japanese calligraphy from the page and into space.
Since her New York solo debut in 2014, Rihaku has presented work at the Japan Information & Culture Center (JICC) at the Japanese Embassy in Washington D.C. and at prominent New York galleries (2016). In 2024, she marked a decade of New York activity with a commemorative solo exhibition, entering a new stage as an artist through sake label design, corporate logo commissions, and wall art projects that connect Japanese calligraphy with the business world.
Also in 2024, at the National Treasure Tōdai-ji Temple — a site where she holds events regularly — she performed a dedication Japanese calligraphy integrated with projection mapping, widely celebrated in the media as a meeting of tradition and innovation.
In 2025, she conducted Japanese calligraphy workshops at JP Morgan and Reitler Law Firm as part of sponsored cultural events.
In 2026, she was commissioned to create the logo for Kumiko Room by Chef Yoshi Kousaka — a Michelin-starred dining experience opening inside One Bryant Park, Bank of America Headquarters Tower, Midtown Manhattan — an embodiment of her vision of art and business in harmony.
Rihaku's deepest aspiration is to reach audiences who do not read Japanese — to offer, through Japanese calligraphy, an emotion and a resonance that transcends words. Guided by her belief that "Japanese calligraphy holds the power to move hearts and transform space," she continues to forge new frontiers of expression.
