Formal Tea Ceremony

Formal Tea Ceremony: A Rare Demonstration of Gyō-no-Gyō Daisu (行之行台子) in New York

Setsugekka is honored to present a rare public demonstration of Gyō-no-Gyō Daisu (行之行台子), one of the highest-level procedures in the Japanese tea ceremony, performed by tea master Souheki Mori at Globus Chashitsu, KeiSui-an.

Originating in the Muromachi period, this elegant temae was developed for the grand reception halls (kaisho) and shoin drawing rooms of the warrior and aristocratic classes. Today, it is preserved as an advanced, traditionally confidential transmission (okuden) in many schools of tea and is seldom demonstrated outside of formal training.

Students of chanoyu spend many years progressing through the foundational teachings before they are entrusted with learning this temae. As a result, even many tea practitioners have never had the opportunity to witness it in person.

Believing that the beauty and depth of these traditions should continue to be appreciated and passed on, Souheki Mori is offering this special public demonstration to share an important part of Japan's tea culture with a wider audience.

Following each tea ceremony, guests will be invited to enjoy a refreshing Watermelon Iced Matcha, created especially for the summer season, followed by an informal question-and-answer session with the tea master.

Whether you are a longtime student of tea or simply curious to experience one of its most refined expressions, we warmly welcome you to join us for this unique occasion.

Attendance is limited to ensure an intimate experience; advance reservations are kindly requested.
